Black is Back

Kitchen in luxury home with dark wood cabinetry

Black is back.  It’s a classic and it’s elegantly modern.

2019 is sure to offer amazing trends that we’ll love, one of them is the heavy influence of black in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the house.  It may sound like a bold choice, but we want to help give you the confidence to explore the options.  This isn’t teen gothic, it’s modern elegance with a bold stroke.  Here are some of the best uses of black in home decor.

Accentuate the Positive

It’s a myth that dark colors make a space feel smaller.  Actually, you can accentuate a space of any size by choosing select areas or focal points with bold color choices, including black.  Bold colors and blacks draw the eye to a particular area or level of a room.  In the kitchen pictured above, black cabinets draw your eye forward into the room and contrast nicely with light floors, light counter tops and stainless appliances.  That’s no cave.  It’s a dream kitchen with modern flair.

Bold Black Walls

If you want to elevate your living space to dramatic levels, use black paint for the walls.  Use metals, light woods, whites, and light colors to lift furnishings off the dark background.  The eye tends to be drawn into the darker canvas but focus on the brighter objects.  The result is that your furnishings and décor items almost “float” in view over the walls.

Remember, there are many shades of black. Some are deeper, some are softer.  Some are warmer, while others have blue tones that cool or soften the black.  Matte finishes and flat paints bring additional texture to painted walls.  Choose lighter colors for fabrics and furnishings to provide contrast to the dark walls.
